ive been traveling to iceland since 1990 (i was 4 years old by then) been there about ~15 times.... stopped counting
got my first own 4wd ride in end of 2008. stock suzuki samurai 1992
thats what it looked like when i bought it.
but as it was planned before i bought it to go to iceland with it i started modifying it for "the island" so in summer 2009 i traveled with a friend around icelande for about 4 weeks with the for german conditions massiv modyfied samurai
this is what it looked like on our first day with a Calmini 3" leaf spring suspension 30" BFG MT 4,16:1 Gearbox and a cheap as fuck snorkel from bauhaus in those 4 weeks of driving the worst-difficult-offroad-legal roads we crashed 3 wheel bearings (samurai stock axels)
in summer 2010 i rebuild the car from scratch... added a 2" bodylift and enlargend the fenders for the winter fun i added some 285/75 16 wheels (~32") also changed the diffs to 3.9 from suzuki SJ413
after that was done i went to iceland again on my own for another 5 weeks last year being prepared with 4 wheel bearings from which i needed 3 again...
this is me crossing "Krossa"
on the next picture its me on the eastside of "mulakvisl" right after the "high water run"
in the radio i heard what happened and wanted to go right to the glacier where the water exited. so i insanely raced around the glacier just to be told by the police to go fuck myself and leave the area... so i thougt: go fuck yourself, i find a track to phakil from where i can walk... as i do know the area a bit, ive known where they evacuated the people staying at phakil
so, this is me being the only and first idiot that day near the glacier
yes i know it was stupid to go there (gas n shit.... i know the "risks")
the problem with the long wheel base suzuki in europe is that they are are are all conertibles or at best with a hardtop. i dont like that crap. those are not real cars to me. there would have been the possibility to import one from inda or something.... too expensive
so i just got myself a lwb frame including licence papers and a short wheelbase high roof body
now you can fit a shopping bag in the boot and dont need to travel super light, good idea I hope you get it finished soon so we can see the result, I dont think this has been done in Iceland before but many hard top cars have been made into pickups, because Suzuki SJ pickups are rare or impossible to find in Iceland
Good idea to build a lwb. But this Zuki will be utterly useless for offroading and equally useless for road driving. Center of gravity must be at least 30cm lower. I hope this mechanized coffin will be stopped before you are allowed to kill anybody else than yourself. Be smart, -mount the axle housings on top of the leaf springs.
i will leave it like that till the first test drive. if it doesnt work with the axle under the springs its not much work to change that. im still hoping the toyo axles and tires are heavy enough to keep the center of gravity at a usefull height
Engine is a 2.0L 115HP C20NE from Opel Omega A '89 with the R25 manual transmission. Runs fine. Had a little Problem with the Oil pressure on steep hills. but after changing the oil pan to one from a Opel Ascona it works fine. Top speed according to gps is 144 km/h
for now it works ok. only have to build a bigger fuel tank. 40Liter tank with a range of 300km is not really usefull
very good, enjoy your travels, if you are near reykjavik area im at trönuhraun 2 in hafnarfjörður most every night after 7pm, the shop is marked sukka.is in the window and my vitara in front
I got a visit this morning from Sebbo and his nice Samurai i forgot to send him to Óðalsbóndans á Gólanhæðinni (Sigga) The Suzuki goodfather of Iceland so Sebbo if you have a phone i can text you his number
